Day 8: Luke 1:41-45 (NLT)

Mary entered the house and greeted Elizabeth. At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “God has blessed you above all women, and your child is blessed. Why am I so honoured, that the mother of my Lord should visit me? When I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb jumped for joy. You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said.”

Mary was in a bewildering situation – honoured, for sure, by being chosen to be the mother of the Messiah, but on the other hand, pregnant before she was married in this culture and with an unbelievable explanation. Likely she was very young, and we don’t know anything about her parents or siblings. But we do know that God set up a support for her – a devout, respected, older relative, a woman, who was also experiencing an entirely astonishing (although welcome) pregnancy. It seems to me that God provided both Mary and Elizabeth with a loving friend who could totally “get it.” God was taking world-changing action using these women. But at the same time, He understood their hearts and provided the emotional support they needed. Can you think of a time when God demonstrated to you that He knows the deepest needs & longings of your heart?
